Citation and attribution policy

The Encyclopedia is designed to be cited at entry level. Citations identify James J. Tennant as editor and intellectual architect without representing him as the personal author of every entry.

Entry citation

Use this form where no named entry author is recorded:

Tennant, James J., ed. '{Entry title}.' The Encyclopedia of Economic Statecraft, version {entry version}, last reviewed {day month year}. {Permanent URL}.

When a named entry author is recorded:

{Author surname}, {given name}. '{Entry title}.' In The Encyclopedia of Economic Statecraft, edited by James J. Tennant. Version {entry version}, last reviewed {day month year}. {Permanent URL}.

The website should generate a copyable citation from page metadata. Dynamic entries should include an access date when required by the reader's citation style.

Frozen edition citation

Tennant, James J., ed. The Encyclopedia of Economic Statecraft. Version {release}. {Publisher}, {year}. {Version DOI, once minted}.

After deposit, use the version DOI when citing a fixed scholarly object. Use a concept DOI for the evolving work as a whole only after that identifier has been minted and published.

Short form

Tennant, ed., '{Short entry title}', version {entry version}.

Required page attribution

Every authorised public page should carry this compact credit:

Founded and edited by James J. Tennant

The line belongs in a small footer or metadata strip and in machine-readable schema. It should link to the About page and, once authenticated and authorised for display, Tennant's ORCID record.

Reuse attribution under the proposed licence

If the proposed CC BY 4.0 licence is activated, the preferred reuse notice is:

'{Entry title}', The Encyclopedia of Economic Statecraft, founded and edited by James J. Tennant, {Permanent URL}, licensed under CC BY 4.0. Changes: {describe changes or state none}.

Creative Commons recommends retaining title, author or attribution party, source, and licence, and indicating changes. Citing underlying claims

A citation to an Encyclopedia entry supports the reader's use of that entry. It does not replace citation of the underlying authority in academic, legal, regulatory, or investigative work. Where a claim turns on legislation, official data, a court decision, a filing, or a scholarly source, cite that source directly as well.

Attribution is not endorsement

Attribution identifies the source. It must not imply that James J. Tennant, a contributor, a reviewer, an employer, a university, or any listed institution endorses the reuse or the reuser's conclusions.
