National Iranian Tanker Company

The National Iranian Tanker Company is an Iranian oil-shipping company associated with the transport of Iranian crude and petroleum products. NITC has been subject to several United States and European sanctions episodes. Company status, ownership and the status of individual vessels require separate legal and list checks.

Sanctions status and evidence

The United States Treasury designated NITC on 26 October 2020 under Executive Order 13224, as amended, alleging financial support to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force. That is an official designation and allegation, not a criminal conviction. NITC also has a longer history under Iran sanctions authorities, including changes linked to the nuclear agreement and later reimposition.

Current OFAC data must be searched by exact company name, aliases and identifiers. Vessel claims require IMO numbers because names, flags, managers and ownership can change. A vessel described in an advisory or linked to NITC at one date should not be treated as permanently owned or controlled without a current record.

Official advisories document techniques used in Iranian sanctions-evasion networks (2012-present), including Ship-to-ship transfer techniques and AIS spoofing and GNSS manipulation ("going dark"). Their use by a wider network does not prove that NITC directed every event. The relationship with the National Iranian Oil Company also requires actor-specific evidence.

Fleet-size superlatives are unreliable without a dated vessel list and method. NITC's statecraft relevance lies in how domestic shipping capacity can preserve some export access under financial and insurance pressure, while costs, market reach and legal exposure remain substantial. Flag and insurer data also require date locks.
