De Beers

De Beers is a multinational diamond group whose historical control of production and distribution made it a major example of private market power interacting with producer states. At 30 July 2026, its governance page recorded ownership of 85 per cent by Anglo American and 15 per cent by the Government of Botswana. Anglo American was pursuing separation of the business; an announced process is not a completed ownership transfer.

Historical and current position

For much of the twentieth century, De Beers used purchasing agreements, stock management and central selling to influence rough-diamond supply and prices. That history belongs beside Commodity-price manipulation and Producer-state production coordination, but it does not establish a current cartel or current monopoly. Market share must be dated and specify production, sales, value or volume.

The company's relationships with Botswana and other producers combine commercial agreements, public ownership and national development policy. State partnership does not make every corporate decision an act of statecraft. Conversely, access to production, marketing and inventory can give both company and producer governments bargaining power.

De Beers also operates within the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, created after conflict-diamond campaigns including the Sierra Leone diamond sanctions and the Kimberley Process (2000-2003). Certification, sanctions and corporate sourcing policies are separate mechanisms. The historical analogy with the International Tin Council is limited: De Beers is a company with state partnerships, not an intergovernmental commodity agreement. Current strategy claims must also separate corporate announcements from decisions by Botswana and other producing governments.

The 2026 separation process requires release-day confirmation. Any completed transfer would require a fresh ownership statement.
