Yuan-li Wu

Yuan-li Wu authored Economic Warfare, published by Prentice-Hall in 1952. The book is retained as an early Cold War effort to organise economic restrictions, controls and strategic purpose into a systematic account. Wu was an analyst, not a public authority, and his categories are not evidence that a government adopted or applied them.

Analytical contribution

Wu examined economic warfare across instruments such as blockade, trade control and financial restriction. His value to the field lies in treating these measures as connected means directed towards strategic effects rather than as unrelated commercial regulations. The book brought wartime experience into an emerging Cold War setting in which export restrictions and alliance controls were becoming institutionalised.

Contemporary reviews by Theodore H. Smith and Charles G. Fenwick recognised the work as a substantial synthesis while questioning aspects of its concepts and evidence. Those reviews establish reception at publication, not permanent influence. This entry therefore makes no claim that the book was the first post-war textbook, fixed the field's vocabulary or directly shaped later policy.

Later work by Klaus Knorr, Michael Mastanduno and David Baldwin supplies comparison. Knorr examined the political economy of national power. Mastanduno traced the institutions and alliance politics of East-West trade control. Baldwin developed a broader framework of economic statecraft. Similarities among these works can show continuity in analytical problems, but not intellectual transmission without direct citation evidence.

Biographical claims remain deliberately narrow. The six-source packet establishes the book and its reception, but not Wu's birth, training, employment or complete publication history.
