Inductive derivation and out-of-sample testing
Inductive derivation and out-of-sample testing is a two-dataset research design that separates the cases used to build a model from the cases used to validate it, so that a framework is never certified by the same evidence that generated it. In this encyclopedia's definitional spine it is the design protecting the Economic Kill Chain (EKC) from circular validation.
Method
The design proceeds in two stages. In the inductive stage, a declared derivation sample is used to generate hypotheses or phases. Before examining the test sample, the researcher states observable implications, rival explanations and a failure criterion. The out-of-sample stage then asks whether the claims survive cases that played no part in producing them. Process-tracing tests the within-case chain, while comparison tests whether the proposed mechanism travels beyond the cases from which it was inferred.
Application
For the Economic Kill Chain (EKC), the Iran pressure campaign may form part of a derivation sample, but the framework cannot validate itself by redescribing that same evidence. A credible test must identify a separate sample, freeze the coding rules in advance and publish negative as well as positive results. Retrospective validation can improve explanation without establishing predictive performance.
Limits
The design disciplines but does not eliminate researcher discretion: case selection at both stages remains a judgement, the number of cases is small, and out-of-sample cases drawn from the same strategic era share background conditions with the derivation set. Validation is also retrospective, a limitation treated at Retrospective validation; a model can fit every past campaign and still misread the next one if adversary countermeasures change the underlying mechanics.
