BRICS Pay and BRICS payment initiatives

BRICS Pay and the wider family of BRICS payment initiatives are proposals for cross-border payment, messaging and settlement arrangements associated with the BRICS grouping. They seek to support trade settlement in national currencies and reduce exposure to particular external infrastructures. Through 30 July 2026, no official source established a single BRICS-wide payment rail with an operator, rulebook, participant register and reported volume.

History

BRICS Pay emerged around 2018 and 2019 in the BRICS Business Council as a concept for linking national payment systems. Interest increased after 2022, particularly under Russia's 2024 chairmanship, but member motives and exposure differ. The Kazan summit declaration of October 2024 welcomed study of a BRICS Cross-Border Payments Initiative based on national-currency settlement and commissioned further work on possible linked infrastructure, including a proposed BRICS Clear depository. None was launched there as an operating system; the declaration's language was conditional. Public political threats concerning a possible common currency are distinct from the legal and technical status of these projects.

Assessment

The strategic logic follows network reconstitution: settlement outside dollar clearing can reduce particular exposures. The obstacles are structural because BRICS members run different capital-account regimes and already possess partial national alternatives, including CIPS and SPFS. Through 30 July 2026, official documents continued to use conditional language such as explore and study. They did not establish one BRICS Pay institution with an operator, common rulebook, participant register and reported volume. BRICS Pay, the Cross-Border Payments Initiative, BRICS Clear, local-currency settlement and proposals for a common currency are separate ideas. Existing bilateral settlement does not prove that a bloc-wide rail is operational.
